Genoa indeed like few other Italian cities, in order to preserve an enormously significant heritage, has drawn up a 'Regional Register of Historic Shops,' listing businesses that have been in operation for at least 70 years. This is an authentic tour since it is organized in the amazing historical center of Genoa, enclosed within its medieval 14th-century walls, being the old traditional shops found in that part of the town.
You will have the opportunity to discover and admire many other aspects of the city in terms of dwellings, doorways, churches, fountains and other works of arts, through its food culture. Get ready to enjoy the tour with all your 5 senses by listening to the local guide and shop owners explanations; admiring the shop windows, furniture and of course, food colors; feel the scents and aromas emanating from the delis; touch the various products and finally, eat them with great pleasure.
The food tours will provide you with several tastings which equals a full lunch or dinner. In an old bakery, you'll taste samples of Focaccia alla Genovese and di Recco (with cheese). At 'Antica Sciamadda,' have various pieces of farinata (typical food made with chickpea flour cooked in the wood oven), panissa, vegetable pies, cod fritters, fried squids and a fried sweet called 'latte dolce' (sweet milk). At another pastry bar shop frequented by Giuseppe Verdi, have a cup of coffee together with a portion of 'zena' cake.
At the oldest confectionery in the city, which counted among his regular clients the Savoy and other noble families, you will be welcomed with a small tray of different special sweets, in the Parisian atmosphere of marble and precious woods.
In another characteristic old shop, taste extra virgin olive Taggiasche oil and cream, together with samples from a large variety of dried fruits, candied, sweetened and frosted, all typical tastes of the Genoese tradition during Christmas time.
