Full description
Enjoy a 2-hour walking tour with a local guide, who will take you through the Caveoso district of the Sassi of Matera. During the tour, you’ll be able to visit a cave dwelling and a church. At the end of the tour, you can visit the historical center and admire the Baroque churches.
Approach Matera from virtually any direction and your first glimpse of the famous Sassi, or cave houses is sure to be a memorable one. Haunting and beautiful, the Sassi sprawl below the rim of a yawning ravine reminiscent of a giant nativity scene.
The old town is a unique warren of caves and you can easily spend a full day on your own in exploration and aimless wandering. Although many buildings are crumbling and abandoned, others have been restored and transformed into cozy homes, restaurants and swish cave-hotels.
On the cliff top, the new town is a lively place, with elegant churches, palazzi, and a pedestrianized Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
